There are certain questions finance and accounting recruiters and hiring managers are going to ask you. They want to put you to the test and challenge you to see if you are up for the job.

According to our Toronto finance recruiters, here are some of the hardest finance job interview questions you can expect to be asked:

hard finance job interview-questions and how to answer them

1. Where Do You See Our Company in 5 Years?

Many companies ask questions about where you see yourself, an entity, or their organization in the future. It’s a tough question to answer. No one really knows for sure. They ask this question because they want to see if you stay up to date on current finance industry trends. They also want to see if you did your homework and are aware of the latest company news. While there is no right or wrong answer, make sure you mention industry trends and company developments in your response.

2. How Would You Invest X Client’s Money?

Expect to get asked questions about how you would invest clients’ or the company’s money. Hiring companies want to understand how you would strategically approach this situation. They want to see which financial tools you would use. Your response also gives them insights into your knowledge and approach to finance.  Make sure to explain why you chose to invest the money in a certain way.

3. How Would You Handle a Client That Wanted to Make a Bad Personal Investment, but Profitable for You?

This is an ethics-style question. They want to see whether you are client-driven or all about making money and see how you would address this challenging situation. Speak about this being a chance for you to build a trusting relationship with the client. Stress the importance of building long term partnerships that will benefit the client and your employer.

4. Why Are You Looking to Switch Jobs? You’ve Only Been in Your Current Role a Short Time

Hiring companies are looking for a long term fix, not a job-hopper. If you have moved around frequently or only been in your current role a short time, expect this question. Focus on explaining your drive to progress your career.
