ChatGPT is all the rage right now. By now, you’ve likely seen it discussed on TV and seen examples of how it works on social media. It’s literally everywhere, including the recruitment industry. Recruitment agencies in Toronto and around the world have also taken notice.
Much like in other industries, there is an opportunity for job candidates to leverage this new technology to help them out when applying for jobs. This is particularly the case in industries where strong communication skills are optional, such as IT.
I was recently asked to comment on this in the Globe and Mail. Here is what I had to say in regard to IT professionals and others using ChatGPT:
“These individuals are not writers, they’re not English majors; they’re very technical Individuals.”
“They may not jump out at you as the strongest writer, so there’s a huge opportunity for those individuals to get that interview to prove what they’re really capable of.”
However, I do not encourage people applying for jobs that require strong communication skills to focus too much on automated solutions when working on job applications.
“We do a lot of work in the health care and pharmaceutical space, where I think there would be very real risks if somebody was not able to communicate effectively.”
“There could be some potentially harmful side effects if someone is misrepresenting their skills.”
This is also applicable to marketing and communication positions. But, even if a candidate were to secure an interview, their lack of skills would be identified right away by interviewers.
Why you should use ChatGPT when writing job application materials
AI tools are designed to help people be more productive. They can help you generate new ideas, and say things in a better way. In this sense, they can help you create a better job application. Here’s how they can help:
- Relevance: AI can help to integrate critical information from the job description to ensure your application is relevant.
- Keyword optimization: You can identify and integrate important words and phrases into your application.
- Pass resume scanning software: AI can help you craft an application that will pass resume scanning software.
Why you should use caution when using ChatGPT and other AI tools
- Misrepresentation: The documents you submit need to provide an accurate representation of the candidate’s skills, education and experience.
- Generic: Copying content verbatim could create a generic-sounding application
- Lacks personalization: ChatGPT cannot recreate your authentic voice. You won’t be able to communicate your uniqueness without editing your resume and cover letter first.
- Accuracy: AI is not perfect. Far from it. ChatGPT uses information forces from 2021 and before. So, there is a chance the information it provides is inaccurate.
ChatGPT is yet another tool, when used correctly, can help job applicants refine their application and give them a better chance of getting a call for a job interview. If you haven’t already, give it a try!
