It’s that time of the year again. Employers and job seekers are looking ahead to 2025 and are speculating about what they can expect. Will we see more AI? Will it be a candidate or employer market? What will candidates and employers prioritize this coming year?

Our executive search recruiters in Toronto have created the following list of 5 hiring trends you can expect to see in 2025:

1. A competitive job market for candidates

If you are looking for a job in 2025, expect some competition. There are a lot of questions about the economy, what is happening in the United States, and the higher-than-normal unemployment rate in Canada. These factors could mean fewer companies will hire to start the year. Or they could be more selective with their recruitment process. This means more competition among job candidates.

2. The hybrid work model becomes the new standard

People don’t want to go back to the office full-time. They like the flexibility of working from home and have proven they can be just as productive. This signals that many employers will adopt the hybrid model permanently.

3. AI and automation will play a larger role in recruitment

Expect candidates and employers to use AI more during the recruiting process. Candidates will use it to create resumes, cover letters, and fill out job applications. Companies will look for new ways to leverage AI to screen candidates and make their hiring process more efficient.

4. More companies will turn to the four-day workweek

The four-day workweek is gaining steam in Canada. Expect more companies to consider or even switch operations this year to support work-life balance initiatives. Offering a four-day workweek will also be a competitive advantage for companies when hiring.

5. Reskilling and upskilling become a priority

The way we do things at work is changing. For many people, this will mean learning new skills or falling behind. Jobs will change and some will become obsolete. Candidates and employers will work on the reskilling train in 2025. Candidates will want to work for companies that offer development programs. Companies will be on the lookout for talent who are adaptable and dedicated to continuous development.

What do you think? Will these trends come to fruition? Only time will tell. Check back in a few months to see how we did on our predictions.
