Enable the “open to finding a new job” function

This is probably one of the easiest and most often overlooked steps to getting recruiters’ attention on LinkedIn. Use the “open to finding a new job” feature.

To enable this feature:

  • Click your profile picture
  • Click view profile
  • Click the Open to button
  • Select Finding a new job
  • Fill out the information about the type of job you are looking for

And don’t worry about your current employer seeing it. You can adjust the setting so that just people using LinkedIn Recruiter can see you are looking for a job. If this isn’t a concern, you can set it so everyone can see you are looking.

Sign up for LinkedIn Premium

There are a lot of benefits to signing up for a premium account. There are additional features that you will be able to access and leverage during your job search. Start with a free trial account to see if you like it. Remember, you can cancel anytime.

Some of the features you’ll have access to include:

  • The ability to set yourself as a featured applicant for jobs
  • You can see all the people who view your profile
  • You can send messages to anyone via InMail
  • You receive more information about job listings
  • You can set customizable backgrounds

Many of these features can help you to more effectively connect with recruiters.

Keep all aspects of your LinkedIn profile up to date

This is an obvious tip, but an important one to highlight. Many recruiters will rule you out as a candidate if your information appears to be out of date or incomplete. Make sure you fill out your profile 100%.

For example, people often omit smaller but important details, like a postal code. Without this information, it will be more difficult for a recruiter to match you to a potential position. So, be thorough and ensure your LinkedIn profile gives you the best chance of getting noticed by a headhunter or hiring manager.
