Have you been looking for a job for a while? Perhaps a lot longer than you originally anticipated? You may be experiencing job search burnout.

Our financial recruiters in Toronto have seen it happen to even the best candidates. Often, it’s not anything you are doing. It’s a matter of circumstance. Maybe the companies you want to work for aren’t hiring for your position. Or maybe you had a few good interviews, but you got beat out by an internal employee or a more experienced candidate.

Job Search Burnout Is More Common Than You Think

You are not the only one who gets burned out during a job search. According to a recent  survey of unemployed professionals seeking employment, 55% have become completely burned out by the process. The number is even higher among Generation Z. 66% have experienced job search burnout.

If you are feeling burned out, let’s take a fresh approach.

Fresh Ideas From Our Finance Recruiters To Keep You Going

If you are not having success or getting the results you expect, then it’s time to change things up. Our recruiters suggest trying the following to energize your job search:

Review your current job search habits

Take a hard look at your job search habits. Be honest with yourself. Have you been putting in a strong effort? Are there things you could do better? What are some of the possible reasons you think you are having difficulties? Give these questions some thought.

Focus on quality over quantity

More is not better when it comes to applying for jobs. You can apply to hundreds of jobs but if you don’t take the time to carefully read the application, follow all instructions and customize your resume, you could be wasting your time. You are better off putting all your effort into a few select applications than blazing through as many applications as you can. Use your time wisely. A job search can be a marathon, not a sprint.

Don’t make it all or nothing

Your job search doesn’t have to be all or nothing. It’s not finding your dream job or failure. If you are struggling to find something, there are alternatives. Maybe you take a contract or freelance position for the short term to generate some income. This will give you the time to focus on your long-term goal of getting your ideal job. Careers are not always linear. There may be an unexpected stop or two along the way.

Get some insights from a professional

You don’t have to do it all yourself. Getting insights from others, especially those in the recruitment business could be just what you need to break out of your funk. So, consider using a recruiter or talk to a career counsellor to get some input. They’ll be able to help you make the right adjustments to your job search and have success.
