How strong is your LinkedIn profile? Is it in alignment with what recruiters are looking for? If you are looking for a job, then it should be.

All recruiters use LinkedIn to search for candidates. So, as a talent, it’s in your best interests to put in the effort to create an engaging profile that recruiters will love. Having recruiters reach out to you will only make your job search process easier for you.

So, we reached out to our Toronto-based legal recruiter Melissa Hansen to pass on some advice to job seekers. In a previous blog, we discussed 3 Ways to get Noticed by Recruiters on LinkedIn. Here, Melissa lists some key points for how to build a LinkedIn profile that recruiters will love.

1. Make your profile easy to find

Recruiters can’t connect with you if they can’t find you when they search LinkedIn. So, you need to make your profile visible.

Enable “Open to finding a new job” on your profile and fill out the steps to let employers know what you are looking for. Choose whether you want recruiters only or everyone to see this preference.

Another way to gain more visibility is to be proactive and connect with recruiters you may be interested in working with. You can also include a link to your LinkedIn profile from your personal email and your social platforms.

Remember – LinkedIn is not the only game in town. Check out: How to Leverage Non-LinkedIn Social Platforms to Find Your Next Job.

2. Get straight to the point

LinkedIn is not the platform to be long-winded. Be succinct and get straight to the point about your career goals, personal brand and the skills you bring to the table. Make your profile easy to read. Recruiters should be able to get a general sense of who you are and what you can do by scanning your profile.

3. Have a complete profile

Your LinkedIn profile is often the first impression recruiters will have of you. Optimizing your profile can increase your chances of landing job opportunities. Here’s how to build a LinkedIn profile that will catch the attention of recruiters.

  • Choose a Professional Profile Photo: Your profile photo is the first thing recruiters will notice. Make sure you have a high-quality, professional-looking headshot where you appear approachable and confident. Avoid casual or overly edited images.
  • Have an Engaging Headline: Your LinkedIn headline is more than just your job title—it’s an opportunity to showcase your expertise. Use relevant keywords that highlight your skills and industry experience.
  • Write a Strong Summary: The “About” section is your chance to tell your professional story. Keep it concise but impactful. Highlight your key skills, achievements, and career goals. Use bullet points for readability and include relevant keywords to improve searchability.
  • Optimize Your Experience Section: Detail your work experience with clear descriptions of your roles, responsibilities, and accomplishments. Use bullet points to make it easy to scan. Quantify your achievements whenever possible.
  • Showcase Your Skills and Endorsements: List skills that are relevant to your industry and expertise. Recruiters often search for candidates based on skills, so having a comprehensive list increases your visibility. Ask colleagues and connections to endorse your skills to build credibility.
  • Collect and Display Recommendations: A strong recommendation from a former employer, manager, or colleague can add credibility to your profile. Politely ask for recommendations from people who can vouch for your skills and work ethic.
  • Keep Your Profile Updated: Update your profile regularly with new skills, certifications, or job experiences. A well-maintained profile shows recruiters that you are active and engaged in your career.

A Final Word on Creating a Strong LinkedIn Profile Recruiters Will Love

Building a LinkedIn profile that recruiters will love comes down to visibility, clarity, and completeness. By making your profile easy to find, keeping your content concise, and ensuring all key sections are filled out, you significantly increase your chances of attracting job opportunities. A well-optimized LinkedIn profile not only helps recruiters discover you but also creates a strong first impression that sets you apart from other candidates. Take the time to refine your profile, stay active on the platform, and engage with industry professionals—your next career opportunity could be just a connection away.
