Most of us have aspirations of getting promoted. Some of us have a dream promotion in mind. The key is to put yourself in the right position, at the right time, to be the right person to get promoted. Easier said than done, but you can give yourself a better chance of getting that promotion you want by implementing these tips from Toronto recruiters:

1. Put Your Name In the Hat

One of the most common reasons people get overlooked for a promotion is they don’t make it known to their boss and other decision makers that they want to be considered for the job. If you are interested in a promotion, make it clear you want it, or you could get passed up.

2. Connect With People Across the Organization

Relationship building is important, not only within your department but within the entire company. Too many people operate only within their own section of their organization and rarely venture outside of it. Make it a point to connect and interact with as many people as possible in the company, including those in other departments. Join the social committee, attend office events, go out for drinks after work, and become an important part of the company culture. You never know who will have a say in the promotion, especially if the job you want is in another department.

3. Take Initiative

It’s important to do your job and do it well. But it’s even more important to take initiative and be the person who comes up with solutions to problems. Every company needs a problem solver – someone who is willing to go above and beyond their job description and has the drive to get things done. Be the person who asks what you can do to help, even if it’s not in your job description.

4. Don’t Ask As If You Should Be Rewarded

No one likes to work with people with a sense of entitlement. You are not owed a promotion because you do your job well. Be confident but don’t be conceited. Asking as if you are owed a promotion will not go over well in the office.

5. No Drama

If you cause issues, don’t get along with others, and create hostility in the office, you will hurt your chances of getting promoted. Avoid complaining and gossiping about others; rather, focus on being positive and getting along with others.
