A tight job market makes recruiting more challenging. There is less talent to go around. Finding an ideal candidate with the right level of experience, skills, and mindset is more difficult.
Here are some tips from Toronto recruiters to help you find top-quality talent in a tighter and more competitive job market:
1. Broaden Your Horizons
With talent being limited, it’s important to broaden your horizons. Cast a wider net to find potential candidates who typically don’t fall within your usual parameters. Look for candidates outside of your location. You can also be more open to candidates who are not within your industry currently. Finally, you could consider altering the position for remote or distance workers (if applicable to the job).
2. Compensate Well
As they say, money talks. If you want to attract top talent, you need to compensate them well. Make sure your compensation package is in alignment with industry standards. Now is not the time for low ball offers and compensation packages that fail to meet what your competitors are offering today.
3. Look Beyond Experience
Experience matters, but it’s not the only thing to consider. Don’t eliminate a candidate because they don’t check all the boxes. Don’t try to fit them inside a specific box. For example, if you request a candidate have 7 years’ industry experience, don’t immediately disqualify a candidate because they only have 4 years’ experience. Be a little more flexible with your job requirements and must-haves. Look at the whole picture and the potential a candidate has. Experience comes with time and skills can be taught. A great talent who fits your culture and has the right mindset doesn’t come along every day.
4. Stand Out in the Crowd
What makes your company unique? Why should a candidate choose to work for you over others? Why do your employees love working for you? These are all questions you need to answer when attracting candidates. Use social media, job ads, networking, and other resources to make your company a destination for top talent in your industry. If you build it, they will come.
